Today is National Flip Flop Day!
My friends, today is National Flip Flop Day
But, of course, I probably don't need to tell you that. You've got it circled on your calendar already, I'm sure of it.
Now, there may be a scant few of you that have never heard of this illustrious holiday. So here's the rundown.
It began in 2007 as a way for Tropical Smoothie Cafe and their customers to celebrate the beginning of summer. On the third Friday in June, anyone who walks through the door of one of the 300-plus TSC locations across the US between 2:00PM and 7:00PM wearing their finest, floppiest, most fashionable flips, receives a free, 24 oz. Jetty Punch Smoothie.
What started as a promotional gimmick for a smoothie chain quickly turned into a pretty awesome fundraising event as well. So in addition to offering free drinks to their en-flopped customers, TSC will also be raising money today for Camp Sunshine, a retreat center in Maine that offers support and a kind of refuge for children with life-threatening illnesses, as well as their families.
This partnership between TSC and Camp Sunshine caused me to stop and think about my SOLE Casual Flips and, more specifically, the places I find myself in while wearing them.
Consider this: when was the last time you wore a pair of flips to work (okay... I'm wearing mine at work right now... but just bear with me)? What about to a really important make-or-break job interview? Have you worn them to the hospital? At a funeral? Were you wearing them when you got some bad news or lost something important?
If you're like me, then you likely haven't found yourself in flip-flops at any of those times. That's because flip-flops are a leisurely - scratch that, they are the quintessential leisurely - shoe. There's nothing stressful about them! You wear them when you are hanging out at home on a day off. You wear them when you're shopping, when you're at the beach or the lake, when you're sitting on a patio. In other words, life is usually pretty good when you're wearing flip-flops.
And, to me, this is why it makes perfect sense for there to be a charitable aspect to National Flip Flop Day. Today is a day when guys and gals like me, who have the kind of life that allows for "flip-flopping," are reminded that not everyone has time for flips. The next thing to do is to share some love with those folks in a tangible way. Maybe that means stopping by a TSC and making a donation to Camp Sunshine. Maybe it means supporting a non-profit in your hometown - through donation or, better yet, by volunteering.
So rock those flips today. And in so doing, be sure to spread the good word about National Flip Flop Day to friends and colleagues.
