There's no good reason to be optimistic, but there's plenty of cause for hope
We at SOLE spend a lot of time concerning ourselves with sustainability. Our new packaging is 100% recycled, we have recycled content in our products and we have just initiated a program called ReCORK that collects and recycles cork in an effort to reduce waste, and increase education about deforestation and the value of forest ecosystems.

Where are the socks?
People have been asking about our SOLE Socks, which have been out-of-stock for awhile. We are switching manufacturers and updating the line, and unfortunately this has taken way longer than we had expected. We are now hoping to have the new socks available by February, bar any more complications with manufacturers. Finding one that could even make our socks was difficult!

ReCork featured in the New York Times
When it launched its program to divert used wine corks from landfills in 2007, ReCORK America, a wine cork recycling program sponsored by Amorim of Portugal, struggled to find a viable means to recycle the used plugs.
The program collected 500,000 corks in its first year, and has now accrued nearly four million from wineries and retailers like Whole Foods Markets and, most recently, American Airlines.
Many of the corks were sent to a certified factory in Portugal for remanufacturing - a tack that proved costly and racked up a large carbon footprint.

"It's not very often we review products at Cycling Plus that need to be put in the oven before using, so it was a bit of a surprise when these turned up and - with some trepidation - we popped them in the oven at 90C for a couple minutes. These are designed for tight-fitting shoes like cycling shoes or football boots. Once out of the oven, you put them into your shoe, pop your foot in and they mould to the shape of your foot. They're designed to offer more support than standard cycling footwear is likely to provide, and our tester has been very impressed with them, deciding to carry on using them. Up and down
The whole day seemed to be "up."
I was just more than 35 kilometers (about 22 miles) into my first 50k trail race, headed up to Bald Mountain, the highest point on the course. And there, in front of me, as if strewn carelessly like some infantile giant's marbles, the trail was awash in rocks and boulders..

No risk, no reward
Disappointment is an unfortunate but inevitable part of life. Learning that for ourselves is hard enough. Teaching that to our children is even harder.
Some of my personal trials over the past year have taught me that disappointment is as much a part of everyday life as joy.
Through all the years, running has taught me how to handle disappointment and mine the experience for hidden value. People beat us in races. We are disappointed. We can't run as fast as we used to. We are disappointed. It's raining or it's too cold and we don't want to run. We are disappointed.

"High tech inventory mangament system helps maximize sales
08.12.2009 - This fall SOLE, the manufacturer of premium footbeds, socks and sandals, launches an innovative new technology to help its retail partners efficiently maintain product inventory and maximize sales. SOLE's new Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system will track inventory in real-time with an integrated point-of-purchase display, product tags and a retailer website.
Most retailers only track sales on a monthly basis and they risk losing three weeks of sales if a product sells through in the first week of the month. Even if inventory levels are analyzed on a weekly or daily basis, retailers can still lose sales due to processing delays or shipping and transit times. Footwear is especially difficult to track and keep in stock because there are as many as ten sizes in any given style."

SOLE endurance athlete, Jen Segger, embarks on Vancouver Island Quest
On August 24th, endurance athlete Jen Segger will be embarking on a personal expedition - a 4 day non-stop, 750km trail running and mountain biking epic from the top of Vancouver Island to the bottom. Appropriately named the Vancouver Island Quest, the expedition will begin at the Cape Scott Lighthouse on the Island's most Northern tip and will conclude in Victoria 4 days later at mile zero.

Student Research Determines Best Flip-Flops for Feet
"Though convenience and trendiness most often replace healthy, new types of flip-flops may provide the comfort that the body actually supports.
Justin Shroyer, graduate student in kinesiology, along with a research team in the biomechanics laboratory conducted a study on the effects flip-flops might have on the body.
Shroyer said SOLE and Chacos support more of the foot and arch. He said he prefers the SOLE brand and even owns a pair.

iRunFar.com recently reviewed our Signature Dean Karnazes Footbeds. Here's what they had to say:
"Since that initial run I've probably logged several hundred miles and ran a 50k, 60k and a 50 miler on them. Having had them almost six months now two features really stand out as making these footbeds excel over others I've used.
First is the pronounced heel cup. While not as noticeable (to me) on the road, I certainly have a sense that paired with a trail shoe the deep heel cup helps keep my foot in place on nasty sloppy terrain (i.e. McNaughton this year), as well as potentially keeping blisters at bay.
The second is that the SOLE's have noticeably less volume than other insoles I've used while maintaining the same level of comfort. As a runner with a higher volume foot I feel this is a plus, especially in ultras where your feet tend to swell later in the race. When soaking wet, the insoles also don't seem to absorb water like other inserts and don't have that squishy feel even after multiple stream crossings."

On Thursday, our Platinum Sandals were reviewed in the NY Times! Here's an excerpt from the review:
"This sandal bears the American Podiatric Medical Association seal of acceptance, meaning that the shoe was put through a series of tests to verify its manufacturers' claims, and it passed. "The footbed molds to the foot, and the sandal is much more supportive than a typical flip-flop," Dr. Christina said. "In fact, it was the most supportive sandal in the test." He noted that while he doesn't like thong-style sandals, he didn't find the toe strap of this one "overly irritating."
